Homecoming season will be here before you know it! Make your own homecoming mum to make it unique and save money at the same time. I’ve put together a short list of the best homecoming mum tutorial videos I can find!
You’ll notice that these tutorials feature more glue-gun action than I used in my own tutorial. I like my Homecoming mums to have a bit of a more natural flow to them. And well, it’s also probably because I started looking at how these things were made before the hot glue gun became popular.
(Yes, that makes me old, but not THAT old. I can’t find the history of the non-industrial glue gun on the internet, but I would guess glue guns for crafting started being sold in the 80’s. I remember the first ones as very big and VERY hot.)
I’ve got a tutorial for making your own homecoming mum. But if a picture’s worth a thousand words, is a video worth a million? If so, then here’s four million words about how to make your own DIY homecoming mum.
DIY Homecoming Mum Tutorials
1. How to make a homecoming mum tutorial
This is a good basic mum tutorial. She assembles a whole mum and covers everything from a basic ribbon collar around the mum to the easiest ribbon braid technique. She shows you how the flower attaches to the mum, which is missing in the next video.
2. Easy DIY Homecoming mum 2016
This homecoming mum video tutorial is really helpful if you’re new to mums. She shows you her homecoming mum supplies first. She starts with pre-made braids. She gets more into the accessories and putting on things like names. The tutorial is rapid speed to a player piano, but you still get a nice overview of how to add touches like the looped Homecoming ribbon streamer. She attaches “accessories” to thin curling ribbon.
3. Homecoming Mum Tutorial (Basics)
This is just a mum with basic ribbons, but she adds a neck, or necklace, loop. You don’t have to have these except with really heavy homecoming mums. This one is a single mum and stays pretty tame!
The chipmunk voice from speeding up the video is either cute or annoying. I couldn’t decide which. But it does get better! Once she gets past her supplies she slows it down. And she has some really handy tips, including pulling back your long hair so you don’t glue it to something! It’s funny to imagine how she learned that tip…
I really like her idea of hanging the homecoming mum to add the streamers. I hate it when the glued ribbon streamers make a gravity-defying fan.
4. DIY Homecoming Mum – A Texas Tradition
The girl in this video tutorial attaches her streamers with staples like I did. Do you think it’s a coincidence that her mum is one of the ones I like the best?
You’ll also notice that she had no idea that you could attach the flower securely by popping out the center hole of the cardboard backing. She just glued it on. She also put her staples on backward and had to use an extra cardboard round to cover them up. But really, there is no homecoming mum-making mistake you can’t fix, and it turns out fine!
The homecoming mums she and her friends model are elaborate, but not too over the top.
