Kids get to old for the traditional egg hunt before they want to give up having fun on Easter. And if course it’s before they want to give up getting candy! But there are fun things you can do with tweens and teens that are more than an egg hunt.
One year we made a texting scavenger hunt for our three teens/preteens. One of the best parts? The Easter Bunny didn’t have to get up early to hide eggs in the yard!
We all had a ball doing the hunt. I hope you do too!
Easter Basket Texting and Instagram Scavenger Hunt
We texted clues, one at a time, to each of the kids with directions for activities. They had to do the activity, and text us a photo as proof, before they could get the next clue. It’s fun to have them send the photos on a group text or message channel so everyone can see them. Or for a variation, you could post your photos on Instagram.
Since you’re doing this over text and Instagram, relatives who live out of town could join in the fun!
Tips for making an Easter Basket Texting and Instagram Scavenger Hunt
We sent each of the kids the same texts, but in different orders.
We had documents with the texts pre-written for each kid. That way we could just cut and paste from each list when a new instruction text needed to be sent. It was surprisingly hard for the two of us to keep up with three teens. But that’s not a problem. It added to the hilarity of the hunt.
The tasks need to be pretty easy. The kids had very little tolerance for tasks they felt slowed them down.
Before we started the hunt, we hid one giant egg in the family room for each of the kids to find. So they didn’t totally miss out on egg hunting. Then while they were busy in another part of the house during the hunt, we hid their Easter baskets in the living room.
Here are some example texts to give you ideas for your Easter Texting and Instagram Scavenger Hunt.
Example Texts for the Easter Basket Texting and Instagram Scavenger Hunt
- A tisket a tasket wanna find an Easter basket? Reply yes for your first instruction.
- Text a picture of some common objects arranged into the shape of a bunny (and put the objects away after you take the picture!)
- Make an Easter drawing. Text a picture of it.
- Text a selfie with [your sister, or your dog, your cat, etc.]
- Text a picture of your Easter egg after you find it in the family room.
- Add a made up Easter verse (non-disturbing given the Easter theme) to the tune of Baby Shark. Here’s the first verse:
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny!
In case you can’t remember the tune to Baby Shark, I’ve posted a link to a video below. But, you can use any tune that your kids are familiar with, even something like Jingle Bells will work.
For the second and third kids to add to the tune, we copied the verses that had already been written so that they could add on to them. This way writing the song was a group effort.
- Add another made up Easter verse (non-disturbing given the Easter theme) to the ongoing Baby Bunny song to the tune of Baby Shark. Here is the song so far:
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny!
Hoppin along doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Hoppin along doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Hoppin along doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-dooo,
Hopping along!
The second to the last instruction for everybody required coordination and some patience.
- When everyone in the hunt is ready, take a video of all of you singing the baby bunny song you wrote together.
Here’s the song we ended up with.
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Baby Bunny!
Hoppin along doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Hoppin along doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Hoppin along doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-dooo,
Hopping along!
Found an egg doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Found an egg doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-dooo
Found an egg doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-dooo,
Found an egg!
Ate some chocolate doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo,
Ate some chocolate doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-dooo
Ate some chocolate doo-doooo-doo-doo-d-doooo
Ate some chocolate!
