Movies and Series TV Shows for Fans of The Crown
The Best Movies with Queen Elizabeth II
1. The King’s Speech
The King’s Speech will really help set the background for The Crown. Queen Elizabeth II only makes fleeting appearances in this movie. But it’s still the perfect movie to get to know some history about Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI. It starts before he becomes King.
King George VI, with Winston Churchill, saw Great Britain through the dark days of WWII. Knowing WAY too much about the British Royal family, I was very impressed with the accuracy of this movie.
Be forewarned, that The King’s Speech is rated R for language. But this is one of the few times that this type of language wasn’t offensive to my. It didn’t feel gratuitous, but very important to the historical story.
2. The Queen
If you want a peek at what’s to come in later seasons of Netflix – The Crown, The Queen is a great way to start. I’ve read about the royal crisis after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. The Queen does an excellent job of portraying these events.
The Best Movies about the British Royal Family
It just so happens that the two best movies about the British Royal Family, that are not about Queen Elizabeth’s immediate family, are about Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria was Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-grandmother. But I didn’t group them with the movies above, because Queen Elizabeth II didn’t know her.
Queen Victoria’s reign was so much earlier than The Crown, that it was an entirely different era. But Queen Victoria held the record for Britain’s longest reigning monarch, until Queen Elizabeth II knocked Queen Victoria off her throne. (Ha! That was a bad joke.)
3. The Young Victoria
Queen Victoria was Queen of Great Britain and Empress of India at the turn of the 19th Century to the 20th Century. She was also Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-grandmother. You will hear a lot of references to her in Netflix- The Crown. She was the first monarch of Winston Churchill, and Queen Elizabeth the II was his last.
Queen Victoria came to the throne of Great Britain at an even younger age than Queen Elizabeth II. The Young Victoria covers her coronation, courtship, wedding, and early marriage and reign. The jewels and gowns in this movie are fantastic!
4. Victoria and Abdul
Queen Victoria was fascinated by the country of India in her later life. At the time, India was part of the British Empire. This is the story of her closest Indian – servant? friend? Judi Dench is always amazing in any performance.

5. Marie Antoinette
This movie really gives you a great understanding about what it was like for Marie Antoinette to leave behind everything and everyone at a young age. And I mean everyone and everything – including her dog and the clothes she was wearing!
You know this story has a sad ending, but don’t worry – it doesn’t end on a gruesome note. When I read biographies about Marie Antoinette prior to a trip to Paris, I was amazed by her strength and courage in her trials leading up to her death. For some reason, the video is only available resale. But you can watch Marie Antionette on Amazon Prime Video.

The Best TV series (besides The Crown) about British Royalty
A list of one isn’t very many, but see below for the bonus TV series to watch if you liked Netflix’s The Crown.
6. Victoria
Victoria, the PBS series, isn’t as historically accurate as Netflix – The Crown. But if you’re craving something longer than a movie, this is a great series.
The Best Series to Watch About Other Royalty, Another Great Female Monarch
7. Ekaterina: The Rise of Catherine the Great
This is one of the very few things I’ve ever cared to watch with subtitles. It’s that good! I’ve read a biography of Catherine the Great, and this series is quite accurate. Catherine is another noble girl that had to leave everything behind at a young age to become royalty. Married to an ineffective monarch, she had to use her wits to survive.
But she did better than that! She managed to get Russia for herself!
You should know that as such, it’s a little too accurate sometimes. There was lots of infidelity and brutality during the time of Catherine the Great. If it had a rating, it would definitely be rated MA.
Bonus! Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth II) playing Lady Persie in Upstairs, Downstairs
Upstairs, Downstairs is set between the two World Wars. Much like Downton Abbey, it follows a privileged family (the Upstairs family) and the people who serve them (the Downstairs people.) In Upstairs, Downstairs, the Upstairs family lives in a parallel world to Queen Elizabeth II’s parents when they were the Duke and Duchess of York. While not based on any historical people per say, it’s very true to the history of the time. I found it highly entertaining.
I watched it before The Crown, though, and let’s just say that in this series Claire Foy’s character is … very troubled. So it took a bit of getting used to her to see her playing Queen Elizabeth II, who’s much more honest and ethical.
Note that the DVD and Blu-Ray sets are not currently Amazon Prime so watch for shipping charges.
