Usually we have to wait years in between Star Wars movies, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out last year and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is coming out this December! (Published Aug 8, 2016)
UPDATE 2020:
Trick-or-treat alternatives and Costumes for Halloween 2020
Even if you’re not going to a big Halloween party this year, your kids can have fun dressing up. You might want to put together a costume from things you have around the house, as I did multiple years in a row for this Luke Skywalker Costume. All dressed up and nowhere to go? Consider dressing up as characters from your favorite movie series and have a movie marathon while you eat Halloween Candy! Love Star Wars? We got some things right, but we made a couple of mistakes when showing Star Wars to our kids. See my best order for introducing your kids to Star Wars.

Luke Skywalker Costume Ideas
I love how the Star Wars movies continue to have strong female characters. We’re big Star Wars fans around this house, so we’ll definitely be going to see that.
In fact, our son has been Luke Skywalker for Halloween not one, not two, but THREE times! As you can see, even his sisters had to get in on the Star Wars costumes for Halloween as well. I’m sure that there are going to be a lot of Star Wars costumes at Halloween this fall.
Two of those times my son dressed up like Luke Skywalker from Star Wars: A New Hope, and as you can see, that’s a super easy costume.
DIY Star Wars Luke Skywalker Kid’s costume
Luke Skywalker shirt
For the top, use the top of a white martial arts or karate uniform. So many kids take lessons, you can probably find one at your local thrift shop.
Luke Skywalker pants
You just need some khaki or light brown pants. Again, check at your local thrift store. Ones your kid can wear again are a great idea!
Luke Skywalker legging/boot wrap
Tear or cut strips of brown cloth. I just used some out of my sewing supplies, but any inexpensive cotton cloth will do. We started above the shoes just because it was easier. Wrap around the lower legs and secure by tucking in the ends. A safety pin might help it stay put. Yeah, his shoes were a darker brown than his pants. He didn’t care. And no one withheld any trick-or-treat candy because of it!
I have also seen the idea to use ace bandages, but I think they would be more expensive. Another idea is to make cloth booties to go over shoes. I’m not really into sewing that much when I don’t have to. But they look great! (The kids in these Star Wars costumes are super adorable too.)
A belt
You’ll also want to add a brown belt in place of the martial arts belt of the uniform. Just about any brown belt will do, but we happened to have some type of carrying case we could slip on it. Maybe it was for a camera or binoculars or something. I don’t remember exactly what.
But if you really want to go all out, here’s a tutorial for making a Luke Skywalker belt – from leather, no less!
The final touch
The light saber. Actually you could wear just about anything and be recognized as some type of Jedi if you just carry a light saber. There are a lot of different features depending on how much you spend and how important it is to you that the hilt looks authentic. If you want it to light up (which is great for Halloween trick-or-treating), it might not have a retractable “blade.” And from the discussion of some teen guys I heard recently, a retractable blade is definitely something little boys like.
For the record, in Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke carried a blue light saber, the same one as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Revenge of the Sith and also Rey in Star Wars The Force Awakens.
However, you will notice in the photos of my son that one year he couldn’t find one of the (three) light sabers that he owned, he carried a laser gun (a Buzz Lightyear laser gun, no less), and people still knew he was Luke Skywalker. Luke did carry a blaster part of the time when he was rescuing Princess Leia on the Death Star.
